In questo mio intervento ho per il momento tralasciato i maestri del minimalismo nella pittura e scultura per tracciare una strada solo nella fotografia. Ma per chi volesse approfondire consiglio Daniel Buren, Sol Lewitt, Frank Stella, Carl Andrè, Enrico Castellani, Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Robert Morris, Richard Serra, Agnes Martin, Robert Ryman. Guardare le loro immagini ci fa capire cosa è il minimalismo.
Uno dei miei autori preferiti è Luigi Ghirri. Ha cambiato il modo di guardare l’Italia, non più descritta come nelle tipiche cartoline postali. I suoi paesaggi sono sospesi, non realistici, per certi versi metafisici, spesso privi di figure umane ma mai privi dell’intervento dell’uomo.
L’uso di colori delicati e non saturi è fondamentale. Il fotografo della banalità.”Fotografava cose a cui nessuno bada. Per Ghirri la foto doveva ridare dignità alle cose, doveva sottrarle agli schemi, ai giudizi sbrigativi di chi non guarda mai niente”.

La fotografia è testimonianza di quello che abbiamo visto ma è anche reinvenzione di quello che abbiamo visto. Sostanzialmente la fotografia non fa altro che rappresentare le percezioni che una persona ha del mondo. Credo che inconsapevolmente siamo tutti influenzati dal suo modo di fotografare.
Considering Minimalism I have thought to focus on photography and therefore I won’t include any comment on the minimalism masters in painting and sculpture. For those interested, my suggestion is to have a look at Daniel Buren, Sol Lewitt, Frank Stella, Carl Andrè, Enrico Castellani, Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Robert Morris, Richard Serra, Agnes Martin, Robert Ryman. Just a look at their images can help us understanding the real meaning of Minimalism.
This issue is related to Luigi Ghirri, one of my preferred photographers. He changed the way we look at Italy, no longer framed as in a postcard. Ghirri’s urban landscapes are in some way suspended, certainly not realistic and sometimes metaphysical. They do not include any human elements, but they always reflect a man-altered environment.

No vivid and high saturated colors but delicate and soft color tones are crucial to his photography. He is the photographer of the ordinary things. “He was used to capture things, nobody apparently cared about. Ghirri’s thought was that photography could give back meaning and dignity to things, save them from obvious schemes and capture the attention of those people that didn’t pay attention to anything”. Photography can witness what we see, but overall is a reshaping of what we have seen. Basically, photography helps representing what we perceive from the surrounding world.
I think that all of us have been unconsciously affected by Ghirri’s photographic style.
